This 1968 release on Verve Records introduced Brazilian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Marcos Valle to a wider international audience.
Valli, who had already established a solid reputation in Brazil with songs such as “SambadeVerao,” teamed up with producers Bob Morgan and Ray Gilbert to create this album, which fused Brazilian rhythmic styles with the studio orchestration of the time in the United States. Anamaria Valli provided vocals for the recording sessions, and the arrangements were handled by Yumir Deodato. Deodato’s arrangements skillfully integrate Valli’s guitar and vocals into the string, brass, and rhythm section lineup typical of Verve Records’ late-1960s productions. The repertoire includes English-language versions of songs co-written by Valle—such as “So Nice (Summer Samba),” “Chup Chup, I Got Away,” and “Safely in Your Arms”—as well as additional tracks that reflect his concise compositional style and feather-light sense of rhythm. This album is a magnificent record of the intersection between Brazilian popular music of the late 1960s and international pop-jazz studio production techniques.
