Alan Morse—Neal Morse’s older brother and the sole original member of Spock’s Beard, a band that has defined the North American progressive rock scene since the 1990s—has released his second solo album, his first in nearly 19 years since his 2007 debut *Four O’Clock and Hysteria*! Shifting direction from his previous instrumental album—which prominently featured his technical guitar playing, often overlooked in the band—this new release features Neal Morse (vocals/guitar) at the helm, alongside current and former SPOCK'S BEARD members, as well as guests including Ted Leonard (vocals), Ryo Okumoto (keyboards), Dave Meros (bass), Nick D'Virgilio (drums), and Jimmy Keegan (drums). and former SPOCK'S BEARD members, as well as Simon Phillips (drums) and Tony Levin (bass), he has shifted to a melodic rock style with vocal tracks—a sound that feels like a more pop-oriented and softer version of SPOCK'S BEARD. The album features tracks like "It's Never Enough," which sounds almost exactly like SPOCK'S BEARD, complete with thick keyboard arrangements and tight, crisp drums, and the quirky instrumental "Bass Solo," which features, as the title suggests, layered bass tracks and electronic percussion. While these standout tracks are interspersed throughout, the album as a whole should be discussed within the context of AOR rather than prog or symphonic rock. It is a diverse and rich work that exudes the composure and maturity one would expect from veteran musicians!
