(aka The Burden of Black Genius), a documentary film about Sly & the Family Stone, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2025 and has been available on Hulu in the U.S. since February 13, 2025 (Japanese release date TBA). The film was announced for production in February 2021 and is directed by Questlove (leader of The Roots), who directed the documentary Summer of Soul and also won an Oscar (Academy). The soundtrack features 21 tracks, including the band's hit songs, seven rare and unreleased versions of songs, and three new unreleased edits by Questlove and Brooklyn DJ/remixer/hip-hop producer J. Period. The documentary film explores the legends and lives of the band through their hits ("Hot Funk In the Summertime," "Thank You," "I Want To Take You Higher") and hit albums ("Stand!" and "There's a Riot Goin' On"), transcending race, gender, and genres such as soul, funk, gospel, Latin, and psychedelic rock. and hit albums ("Stand!" and "There's a Riot Goin' On"), the film portrays legends and their lives across genres such as soul, funk, gospel, Latin, and psychedelic rock, as well as race and gender, and includes songs by Andre 3000, D'Angelo, Chaka Khan, Q-Tip, Nile Rodgers, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, George Clinton, Ruth Copeland, and many others. Clinton, Ruth Copeland, Clive Davis, and others are also highlights of the interviews. Questlove said on social media, "The film explores Sly Stone's life, music, and cultural influences and sheds light on the issues faced by successful black artists.
