Description:
COSMIC CATHEDRAL, a super group that brings together legends of various genres, makes its debut with "Deep Water". If you are a renowned progressive rock musician who has produced a lot of work, and you want to create something different from what is generally expected, what do you do? One answer is to work with musicians who have a wealth of experience and international recognition. Deep Water, the debut album from Neal Morse's new band COSMIC CATHEDRAL, does just that. One day at a STEVE HACKETT gig in Nashville, Neal met Chester Thompson, former drummer for GENESIS. He recalls that he felt at that time that he should do something with Chester. The two then had dinner and confirmed to each other that they had a number of great ideas at Chester's home. The next pieces of the jigsaw puzzle were guitarist and singer Phil Keaggy (GLASS HARP), with whom Neal had previously collaborated, and Bryon, an accomplished bass guitarist who had played on Neal's landmark album Testimony (2003) House (Robert Plant, Alison Krauss). Then, in June and July 2024, Chester and Bryon gathered at Neal's studio to begin recording. Much of the album came out of jam sessions that included Jerry Guidroz, Neal Morse's longtime sound engineer. (Neal Morse calls it a "Prog meets Yacht Rock meets The Beatles" kind of album, and it is unmistakably jazz. And there are unmistakable jazz fusion influences as well. He adds, "The guys are masters at creating a real groove. We can play progressive rock and still sound like Steely Dan, and when Phil and I start singing, we sound like The Beatles! he says. This album, created by legends of various genres, contains a world with a variety of landscapes far beyond our imagination, including the 13-minute-plus (1) "The Heart of Life" and the 38-minute epic "Deep Water Suite," which spans nine chapters. Of the work, Phil says, "This album is a musical feast. It is full of creative and heartfelt lyrics. This recording was one of the highlights of my musical career! Chester continues, "I'm really looking forward to sharing this with you. We had great communication with each other. This is one of my favorite projects I've ever been a part of.Now, will Neal's diehard fans really enjoy this album? I know that progressive rock fans really enjoy the good stuff, even if it doesn't have the odd beat! But I think the fans will appreciate how different this album is," Neal says confidently.
