A legendary performance of Brahms by the French virtuoso Paul Meyer is back, alongside a new recording of Reinecke! Carl Reinecke’s “Undine” Sonata is known as a staple of the Romantic repertoire and as a classic piece for flute and piano. The Vienna Urtext edition by Dr. Ilmyrind Kapele, published in 2010, is based on Reinecke’s own clarinet version—published in 1885, three years after the flute version—but is not merely a transposed version; it highlights the significance of this revised edition by incorporating the clarinet’s mid-range and and makes full use of the dark, deep timbre of the A-clarinet. Alongside Reinecke’s other works for clarinet, this has become an important edition that had long been forgotten. Paul Meye plays with restrained vibrato, making full use of the diverse expressiveness of the clarinet’s lower-mid range. With a delicate tone supported by flawless technique and artistic sensibility, he performs this sensual and fantastical music of the late Romantic period. The two pieces by Brahms are masterful performances by Meye, and the recordings originally released by RCA are included here and reissued. Sony Music
