This album features little-known works by the Bolognese School—the center of 17th-century Italian music—in the latest critical editions. As exemplified by its recordings of Haydn and Beethoven symphonies conducted by Giovanni Antonini and Schubert symphonies conducted by Heinz Holliger, the ensemble has earned high acclaim for its innovative performances across a wide repertoire ranging from the Baroque to the present day, carefully considering period authenticity and selectively using modern and period instruments depending on the piece. The album titled “Bologna 1666,” released in 2017, introduced the music of the Bologna School, which was the most important musical center in 17th-century Italy. Founded in 1666, the “Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna”—one of Italy’s largest music academies—exerted an influence on the music of this era in Europe that extended far beyond Italy’s borders. However, with the exception of Trelli, most of the compositions have been forgotten. This second album, which focuses on the little-known Bolognese School, sheds light not only on instrumental works but also on vocal works from that era, featuring the outstanding Catalan soprano Nuria Rial. The three vocal works repeatedly employ images and metaphors related to “air.” Specifically, they depict the anxious thoughts of a lover who, as if driven by the air, cannot find peace and suffers in anguish (Colonna’s aria “Pensierivaganti”); or the story of an angel descending from heaven to save people (Perti’s cantata “Vienipurconituoivezzi”), or the aura that permeates a sacred place (Polaro’s motet “Auraesacraeamatiardores”). These works for soprano solo are juxtaposed with the concertos for orchestra by Giuseppe Trelli, who was born in Venice, lived in Bologna from 1684 onward, and built his career as a composer there. This recording is based on a new critical edition by Italian musicologists Francesco Lora and Giovanni Andrea Seki, and Concertmaster (baroque violin) Julia Schröder and the instrumental ensemble unearth these little-known masterpieces, offering a glimpse into the unique musical artistry that evolved in 17th-century Bologna.
