Nils Menkemayer, a rising star in the viola world, has also received high praise for his “deep, resonant bass tones that strike a chord in the heart—emotionally rich, dramatic, and deeply compelling.” Through their collaboration, the two musicians explore the possibilities of this unprecedented combination of the recorder and viola, inviting listeners on a journey from the Middle Ages to the present day through works by Bach and other fascinating compositions. These works are characterized by the beautiful melodies found in Bach’s “Inventions,” “The Musical Offering,” “The Art of Fugue,” and “Trio Sonatas.” In an interview about this album, Menkemayer spoke about Bach, saying, “He adapted instrumental arrangements and key signatures to suit changing performance contexts and also arranged works by other composers. During the Baroque era, access to the music of other composers was surprisingly widespread. This serves as a great source of inspiration for us today as we consider arrangements of works by various composers.” Hildegard von Bingen’s gentle and meditative “O Ecclesia,” the “Tarock Reel” by Scottish composer James Oswald, the energetic Irish country dance “Black Joke,” and pieces from Bartók’s “44 Violin Duets”—works inspired by folk melodies from many Eastern European countries. You can also hear beautiful works by American composers Morton Feldman and John Cage, as well as two pieces ( “Message Among the Trees II” and “Dance for Two”). In the other pieces, Menkemayer and Oberlinger extract the distinct characteristics of the originals and reinterpret elements such as early music and folk songs in a free and subjective manner.
