Finnish melodic death metal band INSOMNIUM combines deep sadness and darkness, beautiful melodies, and high musicianship in their impressive ninth album, "Anno 1696". Formed in 1997 in Joensuu, North Karjala, Finland, the five-piece melodic death metal band INSOMNIUM has been consistently releasing albums since their debut "In the Halls of Awaiting" in 2002. Their seventh album "Winter's Gate" (2016), an epic 40-minute concept album, reached #1 on the album chart in their native Finland, and their eighth album "Heart Like a Grave" (2019) also reached the top spot (and was their first #10 album in Germany). In 2021, the band is accelerating its activities with the release of an EP titled "Argent Moon". Combining deep darkness, beautiful melodies, and high musicianship, the band's latest release, Anno 1696, has the ability to take us on a powerful journey into another world. Based on an original short story by Niilo Sevanen, the music tells a brooding tale of deep sadness and crumbling shards of hope, woven together with anger and morbid lullabies.The year 1696 is said to be a time of unrest, with a famine that claimed the loss of one-third of Finland's population, witch hunts throughout Europe, and the horrors of the witch trials reaching into the remote and majestic landscapes of Finland and Sweden. The track "1696," which opens the work, presents an expansive soundscape. The storm of sound and the roar of death intertwine in "White Christ," the hauntingly catchy "Godforsaken," the fusion of melancholy and speed in "Lilian," a song about a beautiful woman standing by a lake, and the epic "The Rapids," which closes the album with an overwhelming worldview. The album closes with the epic "The Rapids".
