A world-renowned oboist, a composer with a unique musical language, and an exceptional conductor capable of discovering new beauty in well-worn works— —Heinz Holliger’s multifaceted career as a multi-instrumentalist has not only shown no signs of slowing down since he celebrated his 80th birthday in 2019 but has, in fact, burned with even greater intensity. Even this year has seen a succession of important releases, including the first recording of his own opera *Renée*, in which he both performed and conducted, a recording of Scheck’s “Elegy” with Gerhaher, and an album of Schoenberg and Webern with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra. This fall, Sony Classical will release the final installment of his internationally acclaimed Schubert cycle with the Basel Chamber Orchestra. It is clear that Holiger currently regards the performance of Schubert’s works as one of his life’s works, and the complete symphony cycle with the Basel Chamber Orchestra (SICC-10374)—the culmination of this endeavor—won the Special Award (Concept and Production) at the 2021 Record Academy Awards. This album features three works: the ambitious “Overture in D Major, D. 12,” written by Schubert when he was a teenager; the “Symphony in D Major, D. 936a,” for which Swiss composer Roland Moser adapted three movements from sketches written in 1828—the year of Schubert’s death—into a performable form; , and *Grand Duo*, a unique pairing in which Gabriel Bürgin arranged a large-scale work for four-hand piano for a nonet.
