Special Project Marking the 90th Anniversary of Glenn Gould’s Birth and the 40th Anniversary of His Death Commemorative Release Marking the 40th Anniversary of the 1981 Recording of the *Goldberg Variations* Glenn Gould Archives Series To commemorate the 90th anniversary of Glenn Gould’s birth, the 40th anniversary of his passing, and the 40th anniversary of the release of his 1981 recording of the “Goldberg Variations,” approximately 10 hours of previously unreleased session takes are being unveiled for the first time. Listeners can trace the creative process take by take. At the time of his 1955 debut recording, analog tape recording had only been in use for a few years; tape was still expensive, and the focus was on perfecting each take (this process was previously documented in the 2017 release “Glenn Gould—The Goldberg Variations—The Complete Unreleased Recording Sessions June 1955” (7CD+LP) as a strictly limited-edition release). In contrast, the 1981 re-recording introduced digital recording, and the sessions were meticulously documented using multiple analog recorders. In addition, a film crew led by Bruno Monsaingeon filmed the entire work as the final installment of the “Gould Bach Trilogy,” making this a session that combined CBS’s audio recording with video filming by the German company Krazer. Spanning 10 CDs, the release presents all takes in chronological order, interspersed with exchanges between Gould and CBS producer Samuel H. Carter, as well as commentary from Montsanjon in a separate booth (the analog masters, not the digital ones, were used). Gould instantly assessed the quality of each take and memorized it precisely. Before recording each variation, he would always play back the end of the previous variation’s take to check the tempo and expression, demonstrating his keen awareness of the work’s overall structure. He would sometimes add dramatic contrast for the video (there are even instances where he specified, “This is a performance for the video”), demonstrating that he clearly understood the differences between recording for video and for audio. An examination of the recording logs and session tapes revealed that during the two-day session when Samuel H. Carter—credited as producer—was ill, the sessions were directed by the then-29-year-old American composer Richard Einhorn (also spelled Einhorn; born 1952). DISC 11 features the complete, final-edit versions of all tracks. It uses the DSD remastered version, re-edited from the analog masters by Louise de la Fuente in 2002. (1/2) Sony Music
