Celebrating the New Year with the Vienna Philharmonic’s magnificent waltzes and polkas. The Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert takes place every January 1st. It is one of the most famous events in the world of classical music—a major event broadcast via TV and radio from Vienna’s iconic Golden Musikverein Hall to over 90 countries worldwide, attracting an audience of 50 million viewers. With a history spanning more than 75 years since its inception in 1939, this concert features waltzes and polkas by the Strauss family—symbols of Vienna, the City of Music—and its exorbitantly priced tickets are said to be the hardest to obtain in the world. In 2022, Daniel Barenboim—who currently has the closest relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic—will take the podium for the first time in eight years, since 2009 and 2014. Barenboim was also the first conductor to lead the Vienna Philharmonic after it was forced to suspend performances due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This concert is also a gift from the Vienna Philharmonic to the maestro, who turns 80 this year. The program features not only classics such as “The Blue Danube” and the “Radetzky March,” but also a diverse selection of works that weave in themes from various anniversaries in 2021, offering a refreshing and dynamic experience. Daniel Barenboim is a conductor and pianist born in Argentina in 1942. He made his debut as a child prodigy pianist at the age of seven. Beginning in the 1960s, he shifted his focus to conducting, appearing as a guest conductor with major orchestras around the world. After serving as music director of the Orchestre de Paris and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, he became music director of the Berlin State Opera.
