The Boston Symphony Chamber Players

Description:

A Chamber Music Feast by America's Leading Players of the 1960's - The Complete Legendary RCA Recordings in Their Entirety for the First Time! Three world premiere recordings! The Boston Symphony Chamber Ensemble (also known as the Boston Symphony Chamber Players or BOSCHAPS) was founded in 1964 as a chamber music performance group of the principal players of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO). The American orchestras of the 1960s were beginning to expand the length of their seasons, and Erich Reinhold, then music director of the BSO, believed that chamber music performed by an ensemble of orchestra players was essential for this purpose. The BSO musicians were still active as the Boston Pops Orchestra (BPO), but since the BPO consisted of the principal players from each section of the BSO, it was possible for the principal players to perform when the BPO gave concerts. In addition, since the weekend concerts at the summer Tanglewood Festival started at 9:00 p.m., the BPO calculated that a concert of chamber works related to the weekend program would help draw a larger audience. In the midst of this complex situation, the "Boston Symphony Chamber Ensemble" was formed under the initiative of Reinsdorf, who believed that the ensemble's precision could be greatly improved by engaging in chamber music, with concertmaster Joseph Silverstein (1932-2015) at the helm! It is. They began recording in October of the same year, and RCA recorded regularly at Symphony Hall until the 1970s, when they moved to DG. In addition to Silverstein, the Boston Symphony Chamber Ensemble includes oboist Ralph Gomberg, flutist Dorio Anthony Dwyer, violist Burton Fine, and cellist Jules Eskin, Jules Eskin on cello, and other renowned BSO principal players, as well as two distinguished guest pianists, Claude Franck and Richard Goode, on works that include piano. The recorded repertoire was wide-ranging, encompassing everything from Mozart to Piston and Dahl, with a fine mix of classical and contemporary works from both Europe and America. In addition to works by Mozart, Schubert, and Brahms, as well as Hindemith, Poulenc, Milhaud, Martin, and Villa-Lobos, American music is also included, with works by Aaron Copland, Elliott Carter, Walter Pistone, and Irving Fine.
