The Boston Symphony Chamber Ensemble (also known as the Boston Symphony Chamber Players or BOSCHAPS) was founded in 1964 as a chamber music performance group of the principal players of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO). The American orchestras of the 1960s were beginning to expand the length of their seasons, and Erich Reinhold, then music director of the BSO, believed that chamber music performed by an ensemble of orchestra players was essential for this purpose. The BSO musicians were still active as the Boston Pops Orchestra (BPO), but since the BPO consisted of the principal players from each section of the BSO, it was possible for the principal players to perform when the BPO gave concerts.
