Singing, Lamenting, Crying Out… A Song of Love and Death Performed by a Solitary Pianist Igor Levit, who has consistently approached album production with unique perspectives and themes, has released (yet another) ambitious double-album (triple-LP on vinyl). Having explored the great questions of life and existence, and having covered everything from well-known repertoire to extremely rare works, the theme of Igor’s new album is “Tristan.” When one hears “Tristan,” Wagner’s opera *Tristan und Isolde* immediately comes to mind; the exquisite chord progression heard at the beginning of the prelude to this work—composed between 1857 and 1859—is said to have paved the way for 20th-century music. Inspired by this piece, the contemporary composer Henze created his own “Tristan” for piano, electronic music tape, and orchestra. Henze’s work is also sure to draw attention in this performance, featuring the Gewandhaus Orchestra conducted by Welser-Möst. While centering on these two “Tristans,” the program also features the Adagio from Mahler’s final (unfinished) symphony, with Franz Liszt’s famous “Love Dream” and “Evening Melody” serving as the opening and closing pieces—a touch that is quintessentially Levitt. Igor Levit Born in Novgorod, Russia, in 1987. He demonstrated precocious talent by making his debut with an orchestra at the age of six and went on to win competitions around the world.
