Rachel Portman (1960-) was born in Hazlemere, Surrey, England, UK, and began composing at the age of 14. She studied music at Worcester College, Oxford University, and has worked on Mike Leigh's "July, A Fourth Day" and Jim Henson's "Storyteller" series He has also gained experience in drama music for BBC and Channel 4 films, including "The Life of a Duchess" and "The Duke and Duchess of Wales. He has written over 100 scores for film, television, and theater, including "The Life of a Duchess," "Oliva Twist," "Crisis of America," "Don't Let Me Go," "The Beloved," "The Legend of Bagger Vance," "My Wonderful Life," "Fairy Godmother," and "One Day: A 23 Year Love Story. I have written scores for more than She was the first female composer to win an Academy Award for her original score for the film Emma.He has received Academy Award nominations for "The Cider House Rules" and "Chocolat" and an Emmy Award for "Bessie/Queen of the Blues." On stage and in the concert hall, he has written a creative opera based on Saint-Exupéry's "The Prince of the Stars" for the Houston Grand Opera (2003) and a dramatic choral symphony inspired by climate change for the BBC Proms, "The Water Diviner's Tale" ( 2007) for the BBC Proms. He regularly collaborates with acclaimed author Sir Michael Morpurgo, with whom he composed the Christmas carol "We were there" (2014) for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Youth Choir; for the 2013 World Environment Day Concert Composed the orchestral work "Endangered" (2012), commissioned by the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, China, for the BBC Singers in 2019, with text by singer-songwriter Nick Drake and quotes from Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg He composed "Earth Song." Portman composed the music for BBC1's animated Christmas special "Mimi and Maimigo's Baby Dragon" (2019); in 2020 he recorded his first album as a composer-pianist, "Ask the River," for Nord Records.For her collaboration on the "Eden" project, she and mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato composed and performed "The First Morning in the World" (2021), a song for orchestra and mezzo with lyrics by Jean Scheier, to worldwide acclaim.
