Description:
Reinhard Goebel launches "New Mozart", a series offering fresh perspectives on the composer. The first volume brings the Violin Concerto No. 6 and an orchestral arrangement of the Gran Partita. Seeking out unknown works and presenting them anew within their historical context: this is the guiding principle of "New Mozart", the latest project from Reinhard Goebel, the conductor described as a tireless explorer, following on from his acclaimed "Beethoven's World" series. Partnered by the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, the series sets out to unearth little-known Mozart and place it alongside music from his orbit, and this is its opening instalment. The first volume centres on the Bavarian composer Franz Gleissner (1761-1818), who arranged Mozart's celebrated wind serenade, the Gran Partita K. 361, for orchestra and published it in 1800 as the Sinfonia concertante in B flat major, Op. 91. Gleissner was also a lithographer who demonstrated the use of lithography for music printing, and he was a Mozart specialist who in 1803 compiled a catalogue of Mozart's manuscripts at Constanze's home. His arrangement reassigns the parts for two basset horns and four horns to strings and flute; intended for domestic performance, it stays close to the original while making its own adjustments, exploiting the greater variety of colour that the strings bring. The arrangement has been recorded before by Consortium Classicum for MD+G, but Goebel's version, with enlarged string forces, is a world premiere recording of the work as a genuine orchestral score. The other point of interest is the Violin Concerto No. 6, long attributed to Mozart yet rarely recorded. Published posthumously in 1799, it was dated to 1776 in the Köchel catalogue and given the number K. 268, but it is now regarded as the work of Johann Friedrich Eck (1767-1838) and is not included in the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe. Demanding considerable virtuosity and full of beautiful cantabile writing, it is a fine example of the late eighteenth-century concerto. The soloist is Mirijam Contzen, who has worked with Goebel ever since recording the complete Mozart violin concertos with him and the Bayerische Kammerphilharmonie in 2011, and who also took part in "Beethoven's World".
