This is the second volume in the complete Schubert piano sonatas from William Youn, the pianist born in Seoul in 1979. Youn began the piano at six, appeared with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra at eleven, and moved to Boston at thirteen. After five years of study there he went on to work with Bernd Goetzke at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover. He then won a scholarship through the highly competitive audition of the International Piano Academy Lake Como, studying there from 2006 to 2009, and also worked with Andreas Staier and Menahem Pressler. For Sony Classical he has recorded duo and chamber repertoire as the musical partner of the violist Nils Mönkemeyer, and the intimate music-making of "Mozart with Friends" (2016), alongside Sabine Meyer, Julia Fischer and Nils Mönkemeyer, was named Chamber Music Recording of the Year at the 2017 ECHO awards. His complete Mozart piano sonatas for OEHMS Classics have also been highly praised. His 2018 solo debut for Sony Classical, an album of Schumann, Schubert and Liszt, revealed playing of refinement and a distinctly Viennese fragrance, and Volume 1 of the Schubert sonatas was praised for playing that "carries conviction through a perfectly realised naturalness". Volume 2 brings together the three much-loved late sonatas. The Sonata No. 18, the "Fantasy", was the last of Schubert's sonatas to be published in his lifetime, and Schumann described it as "the most perfect in form and conception of all Schubert's sonatas". Nos. 19 and 20 were written between the spring and autumn of 1828, in the last months of his life, and published ten years after his death; today they are regarded as among the most important of his mature masterpieces. Youn traces Schubert's rapid deepening as a composer with an intimate sound, capturing the natural, romantic character of these long and richly repetitive late sonatas. The Adagio in E major, D 612 - "this music sounds to me like an improvisation", says Youn - is placed between the Sonata No. 4 and the Sonata No. 20. Sony Music
