A world of magic and fantasy, brought to life by a beautiful cello. Rafael Gromes has earned a reputation for playing the cello with great distinction, flamboyance, passion, and expressiveness. What distinguishes this brilliant player is that she herself enjoys musical treasure hunting: her world premiere recording of works by R. Strauss and Julius Klengel, released in 2020, was acclaimed for "a performance that captures the charm of these works as if they were bursting with romanticism." The 2019 release of Offenbach's works won the Opus Klassik Award 2020. For her latest album, Imagination, Gromes has chosen works related to "fairy tales" as imaginative and story-based music. The wide-ranging selection includes waltzes from Tchaikovsky's ballet music "Sleeping Beauty," Schumann's "Fairy Tales," "Evening Prayer" from Humperdinck's famous fairy tale opera "Hansel and Gretel," and R=Korsakov's "The Flight of the Bear Bee. Dreamy, magical and poetic works by Debussy, Mendelssohn, Dvořák and Liszt are also included.At the same time, the program features lesser-known works by Darvit Popper and Paul Huon, as well as rare works by Margarete Schweikert and Edward McDowell. Most of the pieces have been newly arranged for cello and piano as well as piano trio, harp and saxophone quartet by Gromes' duo partner Julian Rihm. Rafaela Gromes recorded the piece with Julian Ream, Daniels Dodds (violin, leader of the Lucerne Festival String Ensemble), the Arsis Saxophone Quartet, and a friend of Anaïs Gaudemard, an emerging harpist from Israel. The idea for this album came to me during a hiking trip in the spring. At dusk, we came upon an enchanted spot in the woods---the sky reflected in a pond, and the backlight cast a magical glow around the reeds and flowers, as if elves and fairies were floating in the light above the water. Then Popper's "Dance of the Elves" came to mind.I started looking for music that would inspire and energize me and transport me to a world of magic and fantasy as soon as I got home,'' Gromes said.
