Description:
Xavier de Mestre, an innovator who revolutionized the concept of the harp instrument, began playing the harp at a music school in his native Toulon, and in 1998 won first prize and two interpretation awards at the prestigious USA International Harp Competition (Bloomington). In the same year, he won the first prize and two interpretation awards at the prestigious USA International Harp Competition in Bloomington. In the same year, he was appointed solo harpist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the world's most prestigious orchestra, a position that anyone could aspire to. Since then, he has resigned his position and traveled the world as an innovator who has revolutionized the concept of the harp as an instrument. In this album, he plays relaxing and joyful Christmas music. The sound of the harp, one of the oldest instruments in the world, is well suited for playing Christmas music, and this album features a selection of various Christmas-related pieces, including orchestral works and famous Christmas carols, arranged for solo harp. The famous "Waltz of the Flowers" from Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker" and a piece by Leontovitsch offer the listener the opportunity to enjoy the diversity of harp music in an arrangement by the young Russian harpist and composer Alexander Boldachev. Also included is Xavier's own arrangement of "Dance of the Confetti Spirit." Also included are a number of concert variations and paraphrases of Christmas carols by harpist and composer Carlos Salcedo (1885-1961). Salcedo was an American (born in Arcachon, France, ethnically Spanish) harpist, composer, conductor, pianist, and educator. One of the greatest virtuosos in the history of the harp, he is best known for his efforts to promote avant-garde music as an ally of Edgar Varèse, and his extraordinary technique allowed him to develop his own unique harp playing style. The theme of the original Christmas carol is simple and very short, but Mestre's performance is fantastically and magnificently expressive of the story hidden within it. Sony Music
