The latest recording by one of the greatest cellists of our time, Yo-Yo Ma, Beethoven: The Complete Cello Sonatas, his second recording of the complete works with the virtuoso Emanuel Ax, recorded at the Seiji Ozawa Hall in August 2020. Yo-Yo Ma's latest album is a three-disc set featuring the complete cello sonatas Nos. 1-5 and three variations on works by Handel and Mozart, two of Beethoven's favorite composers. If Bach's "Suite for Unaccompanied Cello" is the Old Testament, Beethoven's cello sonatas are the New Testament, and are widely loved as the most important repertoire in classical music. Yo-Yo Ma recorded the complete Beethoven Cello Sonatas with Emanuel Ax between 1981 and 1985, and now, 40 years later, the long-awaited re-recording has been realized worldwide. The recording was made in August 2020, the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth, at a hall named after Seiji Ozawa in Tanglewood, Massachusetts, a famous summer music festival on the East Coast of the United States. Since last March, Yo-Yo Ma has been continuously announcing his performances through social networking sites for those of us living in the Corona disaster. In this work, too, he and his ally Ax will bring us the indomitable spirit and the power to move forward of Beethoven's works with their soulful performance.Emanuel Ax and Yo-Yo Ma have performed together on chamber music albums of Rachmaninoff and Brahms works and with the late Isaac Stern, and have won five Grammy Awards. 2006 saw the two perform Beethoven's Cello Sonata in a duo concert in Japan.
