Beethoven in his teens was, after all, still Beethoven—a superb compilation featuring rare works from Beethoven’s youth. In the concertos, the master conductor Norrington makes his long-awaited return. Young pianist Shi Xiang Wong (Fan Xiang) was born in the Netherlands in 1979. She studied in Switzerland under Bruno Canino and others, making her debut at age 12 in a performance with the Netherlands Radio Orchestra. While she specializes in Romantic repertoire, her wide-ranging repertoire—from early Classical to contemporary music—has earned high praise, and she has been teaching at the Zurich University of the Arts since 2002. She has released more than 20 albums on various labels, including five solo albums on Decca (German-language edition) ranging from Mozart to Debussy. In recent years, two albums titled “PianoMovieLounge,” released on Sony Classical, have garnered attention throughout Europe, and “Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 1 / Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 (Chamber Version)” and “Beethoven Trilogy 1: Fantasia” even became bestsellers in Germany. This album, a sequel to those releases, features only rare works from Beethoven’s youth. Among them, WoO 4—also known as the “Piano Concerto No. 0”—is a little-known work composed by Beethoven when he was around 14 years old. While recordings of this piece are rarely made outside of comprehensive complete-works projects, it is a fine composition written in the late 18th-century Classical style reminiscent of J.C. Bach and Haydn. Furthermore, the “Nine Variations” (WoO 63) was the first of Beethoven’s works to be published.
