A new recording of Vivaldi's concertos and sinfonias, which strongly project the various cultural influences experienced by the metropolis of Venice at that time, can be enjoyed with a spirited ensemble led by Il Giardino armonico's principal cello player. Musica Antiqua Latina was founded in 2000 by baroque cellist Giordano Antonelli (who studied with Ivan Monighetti and is currently principal cellist of Il Giardino armonico). Specializing in Baroque and Pre-Classical music, the group meticulously researches sources from major Italian archives and manuscripts to decipher hidden rhetorical figures, symbols, and patterns, and to trace the fusion of sacred orthodoxy and theatrical melody. In particular, they have received high acclaim for their discovery and performance of a variety of unpublished programs. This second DHM album by Antonelli and Musica Antiqua Latina combines some of Vivaldi's best-known concertos with works that are not so well-known, and that bear witness to the strong influence of the European and surrounding musical cultures of the time on Vivaldi's music. It is interesting to note that the works on this album are selected as evidence of the strong influence of European and surrounding musical cultures of the time on Vivaldi's music.The restored "Sinfonia RV 125," which remained unpublished until a few years ago, shows syncopated accents that may have been influenced by Slavic music. Concertos RV 413 & RV 96 have the traditional characteristics of German music. Concerto RV 517" is influenced by the Iberian style that permeates various forms of Spanish music (from folia to chacona, fandango, and flamenco) as well as Scandinavian inspiration. The "Sinfonia RV 168," preserved in a Swedish archive, shows influences from both northern Europe and the Balkans, with a long improvisation in the third movement by a Greek lyra in the Ottoman style played by Giordano Antonelli. Venice, where Vivaldi spent almost his entire life, was always a metropolis where different people and religious communities met and shared musical traditions. This recording is heavily examined and performed in this cultural context.Giordano Antonelli and Musica Antiqua Latina seem to point us, the listeners, to the sounds of folk-influenced Venice through Vivaldi's concerto.
