Description:
The starting point and the culmination of Gould's recordings for Sony Classical - two unique Goldberg Variations, the perfect introduction to the world of "A State of Wonder" Gould. The debut album "Goldberg Variations," recorded in 1955, made the young Glenn Gould a household name worldwide. Goldberg Variations" was released in September 1982, about a month before Gould's death, and was the last album to be released before his death. Bach's "Goldberg Variations" frames Gould's life like a closing circle, and is indispensable in considering his unique music. The idea to combine these two recordings dates back to 1984. Two years after Gould's death, the first volume of an anthology of Gould's Bach recordings compiled by CBS at the time was the first to combine the two Goldbergs in a single package. 1955's disc is Gould's first "Goldberg Variations," a departure for a recording artist who left a brilliant mark on the 20th century. Goldberg Variations. It is also known for its famous jacket (shown in the booklet), which features 30 photographs of Gould during the recording sessions, as if to illustrate the 30 variations of the work. The remastering was done by former Sony Classical engineer Andreas Meyer, using DSD remastered recordings from the "Glenn Gould Remastered Box - The Complete Sony Classical Album Collection" (released in 2015). The 1981 recording, on the other hand, was released in September 1982, about a month before Gould closed his life, and was the second and last "Goldberg Variations" album released before Gould's death. This 1981 disc is also famous as an early digital recording, and was released not only on LP but also on CD.The digital master for the CD was also used for the LP cutting at that time, but this disc, like the Bach Box to be released at the same time, uses not the digital master but the analog master that was recorded in parallel with the digital master, edited based on the editing score used by Gould and Samuel H. Carter, and released in DSD in 2002 under the title "A State of Wonder". The Bach box, like the Bach box released simultaneously with the digital master, uses not the digital master but the analog master material that was recorded alongside the digital master, edited based on the editing score used by Gould and Samuel H. Carter, and converted to DSD in 2002 and released under the title A State of Wonder. The spacious, stable, and musical sound of the analog recordings at the time of their perfection reproduces Gould's superbly beautiful piano sound. The 48-page all-color booklet includes detailed recording data, rare session photos, liner notes for the first release, and an interview with Tim Page, who interviewed Gould before his death and compiled various of Gould's writings. The book includes detailed recording data and valuable session photos. Sony Music
