Description:
Master Bolton finally shakes Fauré: Requiem! This release celebrates the 175th anniversary of Fauré's birth and includes a world premiere recording in accordance with the new Bärenreiter edition. The chorus is Balthasar-Neumann! This is the third installment of the "Unknown Faure" recording project undertaken by Ivor Bolton, who has been the principal conductor of the prestigious Basel Symphony Orchestra in Switzerland since the 2016/17 season. The previous two albums were highly acclaimed for their unique selection of music, and this one, too, is an unbearably fascinating array of works for Faure fans, including five of Faure's few religious choral works that are worthy of the title, and in most cases, the new complete Faure edition from Bärenreiter edition. The first, "By the Streams of Babylon," is a work for five-part mixed chorus based on a poem about Nebuchadnezzar's deportation of the Jews to Babylon in the 6th century BC. Racine's Elegy," based on a religious poem by the 17th century French classical dramatist Jean Racine, was composed by Fauré as his graduation work from the School of Classical and Religious Music, a career-making work that won him the first prize in composition. The first version was a choral work with organ or piano, but around 1905 it was arranged for orchestra and for harmonium or organ and string quintet. The version heard on this album is the orchestral version, which was premiered on January 28, 1906. The religious zeal and supple, masterful polyphony of this arrangement provide a rare sense of fullness and satisfaction. The Mass of the Fishermen of Vrevilles is a work that was later adapted as the Little Mass. La Passion was commissioned by Edmond Alocour for incidental music, and by March 1890 he had only completed the "Prelude" for mixed chorus and orchestra. First published in 2019 in a new complete edition by Bärenreiter, this is the world premiere recording. The so-called full orchestra version (third draft) in Fauré's most famous work, the Requiem. The new 2011 Bärenreiter edition is based on the first full orchestral version, with careful reference to the parts and other documents of the time, and is a remarkable edition that could become the global standard for this work in the future. The soloists are Katja Stueber, whose repertoire ranges from Baroque to Wagner, and Benjamin Apple, whose voice is soft, intelligent, and beautiful, and the Balthasar-Neumann Choir, which performed in Japan for the first time two years ago in the NHK Symphony Orchestra's subscription concert and gave us clear, clear, and astonishing harmonies. The Balthasar-Neumann Chorus, which first appeared in Japan two years ago on the NHK Symphony Orchestra's subscription program, delivers a superb performance that pays homage to these works.
