The fantastic series that drove contemporary music fans crazy in the early days of LPs has been revived in its original 10-CD jacket design & coupling. The Fromm Music Foundation was founded in 1952 by Paul Fromm (1906-1987), who became the greatest patron of contemporary music in 20th century America. Born in Germany, Fromm studied piano from an early age and was awakened to contemporary music after hearing Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring. In 1972, Fromm began to make his home at Harvard University, where he also began collaborating with the university's music department. The Fromm Music Foundation has commissioned more than 400 works and has a long-term relationship with the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and supports public performances of commissioned works. It also sponsors the American Composers Orchestra, the Fromm Concert Series at Harvard University, and hundreds of Concerts for New Music.Today, any composer who is a U.S. citizen or resident of the United States is eligible to apply, and if selected will receive a $10,000 commission fee and support for the first performance. This 10-CD set was released by Columbia Records under the auspices of the Frum Music Foundation from January 1957 to March 1962, during the LP's early years, as part of its "20th Century Musicians Series," all of which were highly acclaimed. The works on this album were commissioned by the Fromm Music Foundation in the 1950s and 1960s, and were all world premiere recordings.
