A Dublin-based heavyweight whose sound is a sharp blend of punk and noise: Gila’s latest album, *Pugnello*, is set for release Comprising Dara Kyle (vocals), Alan Dagan Borges (guitar), Daniel Fox (bass), and Adam Faulkner (drums), the Dublin-based four-piece Gilla Band has continued to redefine 21st-century rock music for over a decade. At the same time, their latest album, *Pugnello*—which has influenced countless guitar bands with its overwhelming originality—is set for release via Rough Trade. In addition to *Holding Hands with Jamie* (2015) under the name Girl Band and *The Talkies* (2019), as well as their previous album *Most Normal* (2022), they have refined a unique hybrid—one that is neither quite post-punk nor noise rock, but rather defies categorization into either, born solely from the synergy of their four-piece lineup. As soon as *MostNormal* was completed, they began exploring their next possibilities. For Gila, a band that has made bold shifts in direction time and again, their latest release, *Pugnello*, represents their most daring transformation yet. The album opens fiercely with the title track “TheAngelus,” which creates an arrangement reminiscent of human-powered drum ’n’ bass by layering five snare drums. “Jacobsons,” built around a simple, relentlessly repetitive kick and snare pattern, served as a breakthrough track during the album’s production. Its stoic and uncompromising musicality—stripped of all excess to the absolute limit—proved liberating for the band while simultaneously pointing the way toward a new direction. Techno music, which has long influenced Gira Band, has been pushed to the forefront in this album—having previously served merely as a background element—creating an aesthetic that combines unease with forward momentum. This unique and innovative approach is also evident in “Giraffe,” their first new song in about four years. “We wanted to create something positive out of something negative. Even with gloomy and dark themes, if you dig deep enough, you can find beauty within that gray. People don’t ‘overcome’ things—they ‘move forward while carrying them’.” —Dara Kiely I think many bands, as their careers progress, settle into a comfort zone with their own style. But we’re still seeking new experiences and the unknown. I don’t think we could have made this album in the past. It required the cumulative experience of all of us continuing to learn together. —Daniel Fox Gira’s latest album, *Pugnello*, is being released simultaneously worldwide on CD, LP, and digital platforms. In addition to the standard and limited editions (red and black marbled vinyl), a limited deluxe edition (Pearl Horizon vinyl) featuring a 24-page booklet will also be available.
