Description:
The birth of a rare "Gold Star"!! LA's six-piece band on the brink of breaking out, The Sofs, release their debut album on Rough Trade Records!! The Sofus, a six-piece band from Los Angeles, sent a demo to the prestigious label Rough Trade Records—which has launched bands like The Smiths, The Strokes, and The Libertines, and recently discovered acts like Black Midi—despite never having played a single live show. They secured a deal. Set to debut in 2025, this truly rare "Goldstar" band—which has already caused a global sensation, including here in Japan—releases their debut album, 'GOLDSTAR'. The album's title track "GOLDSTAR" is a ferocious, explosive song set against a strongly Latin-influenced sound. A music video for the track, shot and directed by collaborator Eric Daniels, has also been released. Vocalist Ethan Ramon describes the song: "'GOLDSTAR' is a song about the worst person you know screaming at God, 'Give me proof that I'm a good person.'"He states, "What I want to ask through this song and the entire album, in a deliberately not-too-serious way, is: 'Does trying to be a good person for the wrong reasons diminish that goodness?'" "Decadent bravado." Ethan himself understands that what he sings about is "wrong," but where should that impulse be channeled? "Writing from the perspective of your worst self is sometimes important. To let that part survive in the music instead of in your daily life." It is him, and yet it isn't him. He ventures into places many fear to tread. The Sofus's unrelenting honesty, intrusive thoughts, and genre-defying boldness immediately caught the eye of Rough Trade Records founders Jeff Travis and Janet Lee. The day after Ramon sent a demo he "didn't expect a reply to," they were already in his inbox, demanding a call. (1/2)
