Burning hot yet hypnotic... The first step from the "Jimi Hendrix of the Desert" Guitar hero M'Doudou Mokhtar's 2019 debut album is set for reissue on Matador! With a land area roughly 3.3 times that of Japan, yet a population of only about 27 million. Niger, a West African nation where desert dominates the landscape and droughts have long plagued the land, has endured constant instability since independence, including repeated coups. From this Niger emerged guitar hero M'Doudou Mokhtar, dubbed the "Jimi Hendrix of the Desert," who created a powerful impact and frenzy at last year's Fuji Rock Festival. His 2019 release, Ilana (The Creator), which marked the beginning of a new chapter for him, has now received a commemorative reissue on Matador. This album, recorded for the first time with a live rock band lineup, captures a sound that is both scorching intense and hypnotic, honed through endless touring. That sound would later reach its explosive culmination in Afrique Victime (2021), Funeral For Justice (2024), and Tears of Injustice (2025), but this album, Ilana (The Creator), was precisely that first step. The tracks recorded here remain staples in the quartet's exhilarating live performances to this day.
