Buck Meek and producer James Krivchenya have been collaborating for over a decade in Big Thief. Born from this partnership, *The Mirror* began with the concept of fusing the band’s signature live energy with a world of electronic sounds that seem to pierce through from an oblique angle. Drawing on production experience from Big Thief’s *Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You* and Krivchenya’s own latest solo album, *Performing Belief*, they breathe life into the sound through electronic elements and explore a soundscape with depth. The musicians respond to each other in real time, and their performance drives the modular synthesizers... "The Mirror" captures the mood of the collective through interactive experimentation. This album features friends, family, and longtime collaborators. Alongside Adrian Lenker, Adam Brisbin (guitar), Ken Woodward (bass), and composer and ambient musician Alex Somers contribute on synthesizers, toy microphones, and piano, while Mary Latimore, known as a harp virtuoso, provides kaleidoscopic tones. Four drummers, including Krivchenya, take turns contributing to create a wide range of dynamics, while Meek’s brother, Dylan Meek, contributes piano, keyboards, and vocals. Adrian Olsen, who also served as engineer on the previous album, uses modular synths to create a diverse array of sounds and melodies. As Pitchfork noted, Meek is an artist who “excels at songwriting with a philosophical touch,” a trait that is strongly evident throughout *The Mirror*. Through this album, he embraces the unknown, adopting an attitude of continually searching for the right questions rather than seeking answers. The album possesses a gentle strength, while simultaneously harboring an unwavering fragility.
