The album, which features some of their most popular songs, including "Mythological Beauty" and "Shark Smile," was named "Best New Music" by Pitchfork with a score of 8.3, and was ranked #1 on Newsweek's and FLOOD Magazine's 2017 The album was ranked #1 on Newsweek and FLOOD Magazine's Best Albums of 2017, and #3 on NPR Music's Best Albums of 2017, and was highly praised by fans and critics alike. It has become an indispensable work in the story of Big Thief's illustrious career. Following the release of their debut album, Masterpiece, in 2016, Capacity was recorded at Outlier Studio, a snowy winter retreat in upstate New York with producer Andrew Sarlo. The album dives into the daily lives of the hurting and the deprived at a surprisingly quick pace. People meet, part, are frightened or healed, and regenerate into vulnerability once again. Adrienne Lenker's songs deal with the complex issue of identity by presenting a multifaceted array of female figures. These female figures are both dangerous and intriguing, but never untruthful. The album is filled with raw, unprocessed beauty. The songs on Capacity were conceived in the studio and recorded on the same day. Lenker explains, "There is a deeper darkness and a brighter light on this album." These songs explore a deeper acceptance of ourselves and of both our inner and outer worlds." This exploration began with 'Masterpiece,' perhaps as a first response to anguish, and it continues with an even broader perspective in 'Capacity.'"
