Daughter, a band from London, England, carries on the legacy of the 4AD label—known for its decadent worldview and the aesthetic, ethereal soundscapes pioneered by the Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil. Having solidified their popularity and talent with the massive success of their debut album *If You Leave* (2013) and their second album *Not to Disappear* (2016), and with their recent game soundtrack *Music From Before the Storm*—released for Record Store Day 2018—selling out immediately, and has garnered immense support here in Japan, particularly among indie fans. Now, the band’s vocalist and sole female frontwoman, Elena Tonra, is releasing her solo debut under the name Ex-Ray! Featuring Fabian Prin, an in-house engineer and producer at 4AD, as well as composer Josephine Stephenson—who previously contributed arrangements to Daughter’s work—joined on cello and some vocal parts. The album features a symphonic soundscape that feels like being in a dream, with a crystal-clear, dry vocal delivery beautifully harmonizing with the organic melodies of guitar, piano, and cello across a collection of well-crafted tracks. The project name “Ex-Ray”—which combines “Regardingex” (referring to an ex-boyfriend) and “X-Ray”—was chosen to convey the question of what truly lies within. It is a deeply personal album, packed with both a sense of urgency and a need for catharsis.
