The early music vocal and instrumental ensemble “Solomon’s Knot” was founded in London in 2008 by co-artistic directors Jonathan Sells and James Holiday. With the aim of directly conveying the power of music composed before 1800 to modern audiences, the ensemble performs without a conductor and takes a flexible approach to each work. They explore a wide-ranging repertoire, from small-scale madrigal works to Bach’s Masses, which require 10 singers and 20 instrumentalists, with each performer focusing on creating “the most refined and organic music.” They have received high acclaim—notably from John Eliot Gardiner—and have been a regular feature at the Leipzig Bach Festival every year since 2016. This album features works by the cantors of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. Schelle was the composer who established the prototype for early church cantatas and chorale cantatas; this “Open Wide the Gates” is a joyful Christmas cantata based on a well-known biblical text. Kunaud succeeded Schelle as cantor of the church and held that position for the rest of his life until his death in 1722. The “Magnificat” is Kunaud’s largest work. J.S. Bach succeeded him. This “Magnificat in E-flat Major, BWV 243a” is the first draft of the “Magnificat in D Major, BWV 243,” which is more commonly performed; it was premiered on Christmas Day (December 25), 1723, the year he arrived in Leipzig, and included interludes for the Nativity service. “Solomon’s Knot” performs in a small ensemble format, blending agile instruments and voices to create a sound unlike anything heard before.
