Description:
Ivor Bolton, who has mastered the HIP technique and continues his unique activities in opera and concert, and the prestigious Basel Symphony Orchestra present the second collection of Faure's works! This is the second volume in the series titled "The Unknown Faure" by this duo. Aptly titled, this time around, the program includes four works for solo instruments and orchestra, the suite "Mask and Bergamasque," the famous "Pavane," and the Allegro from the unfinished work "Suite for Orchestra in F major," an unbearably fascinating array of works for Faure fans. The Lullaby was premiered in February 1880 with Fauré's piano accompaniment, and was performed in April of the same year in Fauré's own orchestral version. The Romance was also first composed for violin and piano in 1883, and later arranged for orchestra by Fauré himself, but it was never published. The arrangement by Philippe Gobert, a musician of the same period, is included here. The world premiere recording of "Ballade" was originally conceived as a work for solo piano inspired by Wagner's "Whispers in the Woods" from "Siegfried," but was written for piano and orchestra on the advice of Liszt. This is the first recording of the work in Bärenreiter's new complete works. Elegy" is the most tragic melodic work on the album, composed for cello and piano in 1883, arranged for orchestral accompaniment in 1895, and published in 1901. It was premiered by Casals and Fauré himself. The Allegro from the unfinished "Orchestral Suite (Symphony) in F major," which until recently has been transmitted as a four-hand piano transcription, is recorded here for the first time in the world as the recently published orchestral edition of Bärenreiter's new complete works. Bolton's performance brings out the delicacy of Fauré's playing, giving the impression of lightness and intimacy. The solo instrument shines with a bright tone, and the exquisite phrasing is truly charming. The soloist for this performance was Oliver Schneider, a well-known pianist in the Sony Classical repertoire. The violin and cello are played by two members of the "Belcher Quartet," giving us a new taste of Faure.
