World Premiere Recording! A live performance of Salonen’s new cello concerto, dedicated to Yo-Yo Ma. Composed by Esa-Pekka Salonen—who is both a conductor and a composer—this cello concerto was written with Yo-Yo Ma in mind and was jointly commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. While Salonen has previously composed piano and violin concertos, this marks his first cello concerto. It features a contemporary style, incorporating the 12-tone technique, the use of ethnic percussion instruments, and the looping of the cello solo part using electronic devices. “I’ve been mulling over ideas for a cello concerto for 30 years. I actually began composing in 2015, incorporating phrases from a solo piece for cello that I wrote in 2010. Rather than being bound by the traditional concerto form featuring a solo cello and orchestra, I often treat the orchestral instruments as solo instruments themselves, which makes the cello stand out even more. “It was a tremendous joy to write this concerto for Yo-Yo Ma, one of the most unique and vibrant artists and communicators of our time.
