A new masterpiece by Roland Wilson, Musica Fiata, and La Chapelle Ducale! On February 22, 1568, the “Munich Celebrations” were held over a two-week period to commemorate the wedding of Prince Wilhelm of Bavaria (later Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria) and Renata, daughter of Duke François I of Lorraine. Numerous nobles and ambassadors from across Europe were invited. During the ceremonies, the finest musicians—selected not only from the Munich Hofkapelle (the court chapel) but also the finest musicians selected from the court chapels of Graz and Innsbruck, ensuring that the finest music was performed. Lasso composed a new work specifically for this occasion. Annibale Padovano’s “24-Part Mass” and Alessandro Striggio’s “Motet for 40 Voices” were also composed for this event. Although this wedding was a political affair, the music performed by Orlando di Lasso—with its unique combination of instruments and vocals designed to stir the imagination and astonish the audience—was the greatest celebratory musical event of its time, unparalleled in scale. The works included here represent only a small fraction of that event, featuring solemn Masses and colorful banquet music, with the use of rare instruments such as the Dolcian, the cornamusa (bagpipes), and the contrabass trombone. Roland Wilson is a veteran who has been recording numerous early Baroque sacred works from Germany and Venice since the 1980s. “Musica Fiata,” an instrumental ensemble of outstanding technical skill centered on the cornetto (zink) and sackbut, and “La Chapelle Ducale”—a choir founded by Roland Wilson in which every member is a soloist—deliver a performance that beautifully maintains the tension and harmony between the instrumental, vocal, and choral parts.
