Pink Floyd’s Mastermind Takes on Stravinsky Roger Waters (formerly of Pink Floyd) returns to Sony Classical with his first album since the 2005 real-opera production *Sa Ira: There Is Hope*, presenting *The Soldier’s Tale*, an unconventional work by Stravinsky—the composer who radically reshaped 20th-century music. Billed as a work “to be read, performed, and danced,” *The Soldier’s Tale* is a stage production performed by three narrators (the Storyteller, the Soldier, and the Devil) and seven instrumentalists. It was created in 1918, amidst the exhausted social climate immediately following World War I. Waters’ grandfather was killed in action during World War I, and his father went missing in action during World War II; these personal experiences served as the impetus for him to record this work. The original text was written in French, but Waters adapted it himself based on the English version. This “New Version” is a solo performance by Roger, who narrates the entire piece—originally intended for three performers—by varying his voice and accents. The recording was made in 2014.
