Michael Sanderling’s all-out Shostakovich Complete Works (11-disc box set), which ushered in an unprecedented golden age for the Dresden Philharmonic, is finally complete. From the Classical period onward, he employs a light and transparent period style with an antiphonal seating arrangement; for the Romantic period and beyond, he uses a standard seating arrangement with a rich, Romantic style. By fundamentally altering his performance style—including the orchestra’s seating arrangement—depending on the work being performed, he brings out the expression best suited to each piece— —this is the methodology established by Michael Sanderling—the third son of the renowned German conductor Kurt Sanderling and currently one of the most talked-about conductors in Europe—with the Dresden Philharmonic. The results of this approach are fully evident in the complete symphony recording project of Beethoven and Shostakovich that this duo launched in 2015. Based on Sanderling’s unique perspective—that “Beethoven was the composer who perfected the symphony, one of the cornerstones of Western music, while Shostakovich was the composer who declared the symphony a closed genre”—this recording project has so far produced “No. 6 (‘Pastoral’) and No. 6,” , “No. 3 (‘Eroica’) and No. 10,” “No. 1 and No. 1,” “No. 5 and No. 5,” and “No. 9 (‘Choral’) and No. 13 (‘Babi Yar’),” revealing the compelling aspects shared by both composers. In September 2018, Beethoven’s nine symphonies were released as a complete set ahead of schedule, and now, to coincide with his retirement, this “Shostakovich: Complete Symphonies”—featuring ten previously unreleased symphonies—is being released. It is likely unprecedented for a single conductor to record the complete symphonies of both Beethoven and Shostakovich with the same orchestra in such a short period of time; in that sense, this can truly be called a project to which M.
