CAPELLA DE LA TORRE
Description:
Founded in 2005 by Munich-born oboist Katharina Boiml, the German Renaissance instrumental wind ensemble Capella de la Torre specializes in medieval and Renaissance music. The name is a play on the name of the 16th century Spanish composer Francisco de la Torre and the Spanish "de la Torre" (from the top of the tower), which refers to the legend of a medieval bard who played music from the top of a tower. The band is composed almost identically to the actual musicians who played in Nuremberg at that time, and has earned a reputation as a professional group dedicated to historical performances. The latest 2018 album by Capella de la Torre, titled Soundscapes, is a collection of music associated with Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), one of the most important artists of the Italian Renaissance, as well as an inventor, engineer, physician, and philosopher. 2019's This release also anticipates the 500th anniversary of da Vinci's death. Leonardo da Vinci is also known as the "Universalist" for his so wide-ranging talents. He is especially famous for "The Last Supper" and the famous painting "Mona Lisa" with its mysterious smile, but his life is colored by many episodes, and there are still many mysteries that remain unanswered. It is said that he himself improvised on the lute and his own liras, and even had ideas for new instruments. This album contains works of music from the High Renaissance, performed around 1500 AD, that were influenced or would have been influenced by da Vinci. Josquin des Prez, the most famous composer of the High Renaissance and a native of Flanders, is said to have met da Vinci during his stay in Milan, and there is a theory that one of his famous paintings, "Portrait of a Musician," may have been by Josquin. The collection also includes a work by Marchetto Cara, a popular composer of madrigale who was active in Venice. Da Vinci had visited Venice, albeit briefly, and was probably familiar with Carra, who was very popular. Also included is da Vinci's own work, "Only Love Reminds Me of It," a curious puzzle-like riddle.By juxtaposing such works with works of unknown authorship, we will unravel the mysteries of their music.
