Yo-Yo Ma's third unaccompanied recording was made at Mechanics Hall in Massachusetts on December 12-15, 2017, almost 20 years after his last recording. Yo-Yo Ma, who has been playing Bach's Suite for Unaccompanied Cello since he was four years old, has commented on the work: "Bach's Suite for Unaccompanied Cello is the "Old Testament" of the cello, and my father, a musician, taught me to play it every day, without fail. For 60 years it has supported me, comforted me, and brought me joy in difficult times, in joyous celebrations, and in the sorrow of loss. What power does this music have to show us the way forward, even in these difficult times, more than 300 years after it was composed? His recordings in his twenties were acclaimed for their vivid technique and lush musicality, and won him a Grammy Award.In his 40s, Yo-Yo Ma recorded his unaccompanied cellos No. 1 to No. 6 and completed them as video works in collaboration with artists active in different genres (Tamasaburo Bando, Mark Morris Dance Group, Atom Egoyan, etc.). These films, titled "Inspired by Bach," were screened in movie theaters around the world and made the cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who has opened up new horizons, known to the world. In pursuit of the possibilities of the cello instrument, Yo-Yo Ma has transcended all boundaries of genre and culture, releasing over 100 albums and recording sales of over 7 million copies worldwide. Now in his 60s, what is the soul message in the Bach that Yo-Yo Ma, now in his 60s, is playing on his third recording?
