At the age of 19, Jan Vogler became the principal cellist of the Dresden Opera Orchestra and as of 2018 is active internationally as a soloist. As one of Germany's most mature cellists, he has released albums on Sony Classical, each with its own theme. The new recording is an ambitious work featuring the "Double Concerto" for violin and cello by three composers, Brahms, Harbison, and Rihm. Two of the pieces by Harbison and Rihm are world premiere recordings by premiere performers, and the violinist Mira Wang (winner of the Geneva International Competition and artistic director of the Moritzburg Music Festival Academy) is Jan Vogler's wife. The famous Brahms "Double Concerto" is sung like an eloquent melodic narrative, and in the final movement, like an entire operatic duet. John Harbison's "Double Concerto," commissioned by the Dresden Music Foundation and composed for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and premiered by Vogler and Wang in 2010, is a work full of color and dynamism.The "Double Concerto" by Wolfgang Rihm, one of the leading contemporary German composers, was commissioned by Vogler and Wang for performance at the Moritzburg Festival and premiered in 2015 at Carnegie Hall, New York. Backed by Peter Oundjian, who recently visited Japan to perform "The Planets" and other works with the NHK Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, of which he has been music director since 2012, the two soloists' music is accurately received and vivid tone is created.
