A glittering evening of opera arias from the great Valery Gergiev and the diva Anna Netrebko. ■A live recording of the landmark concert that thrills Viennese audiences every year. Together with the New Year's Concert, the Summer Night Concert has become one of the Vienna Philharmonic's signature events since its inauguration in 2004. Held in the open air at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Schönbrunn Palace, the concert is free of charge to an audience of some 100,000, and is broadcast live (or in recorded form) to more than 60 countries. ■Conductors of the stature of Gergiev, Dudamel, Barenboim, Welser-Möst, Maazel, Eschenbach and Mehta have appeared, as have pianists such as Lang Lang and Rudolf Buchbinder. For the Vienna Philharmonic, it counts as the most important concert of its year. ■Sony Classical has released the series since 2013; for the sixth instalment, in 2018, Valery Gergiev takes the baton. Gergiev and the Vienna Philharmonic have performed and recorded together since 1998, with widely acclaimed accounts of Tchaikovsky's last three symphonies, Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. This concert also marks a milestone: their 150th performance together. ■The guest soloist is the celebrated soprano Anna Netrebko. She studied voice at the St Petersburg Conservatory and scored a major success as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni at the 2002 Salzburg Festival; since then she has taken leading roles at the world's major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, the Vienna State Opera and the Paris Opera, establishing herself as a genuine star. ■The theme is "Italian Night". The programme brings together famous arias and orchestral pieces from Italian opera alongside highlights from Russian ballet scores.
