Description:
The gallant and elegant sounds that filled the court of Frederick the Great. “Ensemble Notturna,” led by Baroque oboist Christopher Parameter, is pioneering new repertoire. To date, the ensemble has released three albums featuring the chamber sonatas of Johann Gottlieb Janitsch (1708–1763), a composer who is believed to have enjoyed considerable popularity within the Prussian court orchestra during the generation bridging Bach and his sons. This latest 2018 album, released by DHM, features works by Christian Gottfried Krause (1717–1770), who was active at the Prussian court during the same period as Janitsch, and Johann Gottlieb Graun (1703–1771). In 1736, Janitsch became a member of Crown Prince Frederick’s (later Frederick the Great) private orchestra; he later moved to Rheinsberg, where he established the famous “Friday Academy.” He served as concertmaster of the orchestra, which was reformed upon Frederick’s accession to the throne in 1740, and spent the rest of his life in Berlin. Yanitsch was highly regarded at the time and enjoyed the support of many prominent figures, receiving commissions to compose music for court balls and other events alongside musicians such as C.P.E. Bach and Quantz. These works are written in the glamorous and elegant Gallant style, and in this chamber sonata, the unique instrumental combination creates a novel and richly colorful timbre. Their performance has been highly praised as “a perfect balance of sound, with every instrument played beautifully. It is an art form in which the instruments engage in a musical dialogue without any one dominating the others.” Sony Music
