He has built a career that is unique among artists of his generation. He was named one of the "20 most erudite people of our time" by The Economist, was the first classical performer to receive the MacArthur Fellow Award, the "genius award," and was awarded the CBE in the Order of the British Empire in the 2014 New Year Honors list. Born in the Northwest of England, he began his career as a pianist after winning first prize at the Naumburg Competition in 1983. He has performed with many world-class orchestras, given recitals in prestigious concert halls, and appeared at world-class music festivals, and in 2010 was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist of the Year.During the 2013-14 season, she performed the Brahms, Liszt, and Schumann concertos with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, and appeared with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, and NHK Symphony Orchestra, as well as subscription concerts with the Tonhalle Zurich, Dortmund, and Basel, She was the BBC Symphony Orchestra's Artist in Focus for the 2012-13 season and the First Night soloist at the 2013 BBC Proms. In the same year, he became a board member of the Royal Ballet Company. He currently resides in London, where he teaches at the Royal Academy of Music and at his alma mater, the Royal Northern College of Music.
