Description:

Breaking a silence of nearly 270 years, the world premiere recording of Rameau's complete opera "Acant et Cephise"! Commissioned by Rameau to celebrate the birth of Louis XVI's brother, the Duke of Burgundy, and composed to a libretto by encyclopedist and playwright Jean-François de Marmontel, the opera "Acant et Cephise" is considered the greatest heroic drama in Rameau's operas. It combines myth and fairy tale in one theme, the magical powers of the evil god Oroes, and the traditional tributes to Venus and love. From the sumptuous opening (the overture imitating fireworks celebrating the birth of the Duke) to the horrifying scene of the evil genius Oroës, and then to the pastoral development of the second half, the use of the chalumeau (a precursor of the clarinet) and the wild hunting horn, which were rare in France at that time, Rameau's dramatic and colorful genius is most evident in this work. Alexis Kosenko, born in 1977, has been a traverso player in various period instrument orchestras and founded Les Invalides in 2010. He has also performed in many operatic revivals.Sabine Deuvier was cast as the leading role of Cephise in this opera, and was acclaimed for "a great wind of melancholy blowing in her refined, sensitive singing, with an emphasis on the weight of the words," and "flexible, mobile and full of natural charm. She sang with great expressiveness in the French baroque operas in which she is best known. The role of Acanto is sung by the highly acclaimed Cyril Dubois, who has recently been singing leading roles mainly in French opera. The expressive David Vichak, Wan Roy, who has been popular mainly in the old music and French repertoire, and other seasonal singers bring to light the charms of Rameau's previously unknown operatic works.
