Description:
This is the legendary recording of Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” featuring Mutah (violin) and the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Karajan, released in 1984. This was Karajan’s final recording for EMI, and it is being reissued in a limited edition as a 180-gram analog LP featuring the original cover design. At the time, Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic were at odds over the issue of clarinetist Sabine Meyer (b. 1959) joining the orchestra. In June 1984, just one week before the recording, an “incident” occurred at the Salzburg Whitsun Concert when Karajan abruptly canceled the Berlin Philharmonic and, at his own expense, brought in the Vienna Philharmonic to perform. The LP cover photograph was taken by the British royal photographer, Earl Snowdon, Anthony Armstrong-Jones (1930–2017). Commissioned by EMI to create a pair of complementary photographs for both sides of the cover, Earl Snowdon photographed Mutter and Karajan in the Vienna Woods. The front cover features a photograph of Mutter sitting in a forest bathed in dappled sunlight, as if waiting for someone. The back cover shows Karajan standing in the forest as dusk begins to fall, his right hand resting on a tree. The light filtering through the trees evokes the ages of the two at the time of the recording (Karajan was 76 and Mutha 21), and it is also interesting to note that both have the same red sweater draped over their shoulders. The reissue on LP is sure to bring back memories of various aspects of Karajan’s life from that era.
