Christian Ferras was born in Le Touquet, France, in 1933. His father introduced him to the violin at an early age; he entered the Nice Conservatory in 1941 and won first prize at a local competition there in 1943. The following year, he enrolled at the Paris Conservatory, where he studied violin with Georges Enescu and René Benedetti, and chamber music with Joseph Carve. He quickly distinguished himself, earning top honors in both chamber music and violin performance, and graduated from the conservatory at the age of 13. Following his Paris debut, he achieved outstanding results in competitions across the country. From around the age of 17, he began performing concerts and making recordings in earnest, appearing alongside Rampal, Enescu, Böhm, Schuricht, and Münch. From the late 1950s onward, he maintained a busy schedule, making numerous recordings for HMV (formerly EMI) and DG while also performing in concerts. In 1975, he was honored by the Paris Conservatory for his achievements to date and was appointed as a professor there; however, it was around this time that Ferras ceased giving public concerts. He made a comeback with a concert in Paris in March 1982, but on September 14 of that same year, Ferras, aged 49, died by suicide under mysterious circumstances. In 2017, marking the 35th anniversary of his death, we are releasing a box set featuring all of Christian Ferras’s recordings made for HMV (formerly EMI) and Telefunken. For this release, we have remastered the recordings in 24-bit/96 kHz from the original master tapes, including material making its CD debut. Please enjoy these masterful performances, centered on the seamless collaboration between Feras and Barbizet—both French—which meticulously highlight each artist’s strengths. Warner Music Japan
