In 1855, when the 52-year-old Berlioz visited Weimar, he went to the Marquise de Wittgenstein (Liszt's live-in companion) and told her about the opera he was conceiving at the time. Berlioz, who was always fond of large-scale stories and devices, took this work from the epic poem "Aeneis" by the Roman poet Vergilius. Because of its length, the entire work has rarely been performed in its entirety, and most of the performances to date have been in truncated form. This concert recording made in Strasbourg in 2017 is also in its entirety, without cuts. The main cast, Ene and Dido, is led by Spaius and DiDonato, with other fine young singers singing in an unparalleled performance under the direction of John Nelson, who has been performing the work for more than 40 years since 1974 at the Metropolitan.Highlights from this show will be included as a bonus DVD video.
