Bernstein, who died in 1990, was the first great American conductor and a decisive "force" in 20th century music, not only as a charismatic communicator but also as a composer representing the cultural "melting pot" of America. The Symphony No. 1 "Jeremiah" is based on Jewish liturgical music and deals with the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians, which triggered the dispersion of the Jewish people, and the lamentations (prophecy, prophesy, lament) of the prophet Jeremiah over it. Bernstein says, "Jeremiah's lament for his beloved Jerusalem, which, after cutting off the hand of salvation, was destroyed, plundered, and dishonored." Symphony No. 2, "The Age of Anxiety," is based on WH Auden's suggestive poem about the anxiety of modern life and the search for something worth believing in through the spiritual itinerary of three lonely men and one daughter who have a chance encounter in a New York bar. It offers an autobiographical protagonist against an orchestra whose protagonist is analyzed in a contemporary milieu."The piano plays a particularly important role," Bernstein said. Symphony No. 3, "Kaddish," means "Holy One" and is a Jewish prayer. President Kennedy was assassinated during its composition, and it was dedicated as a requiem after its completion. Its words are not sad, but rather glorify God and assure life. It becomes even more revolutionary as various things suffer through to a climax, gradually resolving as if to reaffirm a different kind of belief..." It is the same with music. It was music that started out as twelve notes, but slowly and gradually evolved into musical music," Bernstein said. While Bernstein's roots in Jewish subject matter shaped his own world, the English text of the narration, written by Bernstein himself, concludes with a dramatic expression of his personal struggle with faith.
