Description:
He was born on June 17, 1818, and studied music with his mother, a pianist, and then with Reichard Reichardt. He won the Grand Prix de Rome and other prizes, and then stayed in Rome. He went to Vienna, Berlin, and Leipzig, returning to Paris in 1843 to become choir director and church organist at St. Tustache Church. After further training at the Carmelites in Paris, he became conductor of the Orpheon de la Ville de Paris, a male chorus, in 1852. 1859 brought him international fame with his opera "Faust," and in 1870 he went to England. Although best known as an opera composer, he also composed many songs and religious works. He is also famous for "Hymn and Pope's March," the actual national anthem of the Vatican City State, "Ave Maria," a melody over the Prelude from the first volume of Bach's "Mean Clavier," and "Funeral March of the Puppet," which was used in the Hitchcock TV series. He died in Saint-Cloud, a suburb of Paris, on October 18, 1893. This 15-CD box set commemorates the 200th anniversary of Gounod's birth.Complete opera disc with three masterpieces. Many songs.
