Description:
Schubert performed by French pianist David Fray, born in 1981. He began studying piano at the age of four and studied under Jacques Rouvier at the Paris Conservatoire. In 2003, he competed in the Hamamatsu International Piano Competition, where he received the Encouragement Prize, and the following year, he won second place (along with the Best Canadian Work Prize) at the Montreal International Music Competition in Canada. Renowned for the beauty of his soft passages, he is also known for consistently delivering expressive, song-like performances ranging from Classical to contemporary music. Now, having established a solid foundation as a pianist, Frey has released a recording of concertos on a modern piano, showcasing his unique pianism, distinctive interpretations, and assured technique. Exactly ten years ago, he recorded Bach’s piano concertos, but in recent years, Bach’s works are often played monotonously without dynamic variation, as if on a harpsichord; however, by masterfully employing exquisitely lyrical and supple dynamics, Frey highlights the beauty of Bach’s music through the subtleties of dynamics and the rich tonal colors that arise from them. In particular, the delicate and soft pianissimo in the slow movements is simply exquisite. This album features several concertos for piano, with performances by Frey’s teacher, Jacques Rouvier, as well as Emmanuel Christian and Audrey Viglou—who were also students of Rouvier. It is an exquisite performance in which “dignity in music,” a principle taught by Rouvier, is held in the highest regard. Warner Music Japan
