Prague Philharmonia

Description:

A collection of works by three leading French composers, Ravel, Debussy, and Bizet. Ravel's "Ma mère roi" was originally composed as a piano piece for four hands, but Ravel himself later orchestrated this colorful piece, and the Prague Philharmonia Orchestra, led by the well-known opera conductor, Villaume, creates a unique dreamy sound. The free-flowing wind section and harp sound that adorns the lustrous strings are a must-hear. The Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra, a work from 1890, before Debussy had acquired the Impressionist phraseology, is said to have been unsatisfactory to Debussy himself in its perfection, but as a Romantic concerto it is perfect, especially the piano passages reminiscent of Fauré's are beautiful, and it is a rare work at the end of the Late Romantic period. It is a rare work that marks the end of the late Romantic period. The performance is by the charismatic piano virtuoso Andrew von Oen, who began playing piano at the age of five and performed with an orchestra at ten, and at seventeen with the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. He has also performed with the Philadelphia Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, New Mexico Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Singapore Symphony, and others. At the Juilliard School, he studied with Herbert Stessin and Jerome Lowenthal, and was also taught by Alfred Brendel and Leon Fleischer. His performances have been frequently broadcast on National Public Radio and he has been invited as a guest on its "Performance Today" program, and since 2016 he has been living and performing in New York and Paris. Placed last is Bizet's symphony, which is very popular these days. The last work on the program is Bizet's recently popular symphony, a work that was never performed during Bizet's lifetime because symphonies were not popular in France at the time, but it is a cohesive and lively work.
